Welcome to the third installment of my Kyoto “Hanami Anaba” (hidden gem cherry blossom spots) series! Though the blossoms have faded by the time this video is released – such is the life of a hobbyist recording daily moments, free from the pressure of a professional content creator – I still wanted to share the beauty of the cherry blossoms along the Kamo-gawa River.
When thinking of riverside cherry trees, popular spots like Sewaritei, Meguro River (in Tokyo), Yodo River, or Kyoto’s own Philosopher’s Path often come to mind.
But did you know that Kamo-gawa is essentially the upper part of Kyoto’s famous Kamo River (鴨川)? They share the same pronunciation in Japanese. The Kamo-gawa flows down from the north and merges with the Takano River, and from that point south, it’s known as the Kamo River.
The “Kamo River Delta” near Demachiyanagi Station is the meeting point of these two rivers. With its famous stepping stones, you’ll often see people, young and old, enjoying themselves here – it feels like a scene straight out of a healing, everyday-life Japanese anime!
The Kamo River itself is often called Kyoto’s “Mother River” and truly represents “Kyo-culture.” In summer, the riverside dining platforms (Kawadoko/Noryo-yuka) are a unique sight, and the banks between Sanjo and Shijo bridges are always bustling with tourists. The adjacent Pontocho and Kiyamachi streets are iconic areas filled with traditional Kyoto charm.
However, if you venture just a little further north (yes, literally heading north), you’ll discover a different world – a peaceful haven with far fewer tourists. This is the core message of this series:
“By taking just a small step away from the crowds, you can find another view offering peace and comfort.”
So, let’s take a slow walk north!
On this particular day (April 13th), it was already the tail end of the cherry blossom season, and the weather was a bit cloudy. Perhaps trying to catch the last glimpse of the blossoms, groups of students and friends were still picnicking and enjoying the riverside.
Besides beautiful cherry trees and other plants, the riverside area features a cycling path, basketball courts, and plenty of green space perfect for picnics. Historically, the riverbed (Kawara) was a unique public space – it was used for outdoor performances (like by Izumo no Okuni, considered the founder of Kabuki), gatherings, and served many roles throughout history.
The river also plays a part in many Kyoto traditional festivals, with parts of the Aoi Matsuri procession passing nearby, and the Gozan no Okuribi fires in summer being wonderfully visible from its banks.
So, with just a book and a bottle of water, I walked north, found a quiet spot to sit and read, and eventually reached Kitaoji Station before turning back. This is roughly my “Reading Path” routine, something I do every couple of weeks.

京都・賀茂川 桜散策～知られざる花見穴場へ～
花見穴場シリーズ、ついに第三弾です！残念ながら、この動画を公開する頃には桜はもう終わってしまいましたが…趣味で日常を記録しているので、プロのようなタイムリーな発信はできませんし、再生回数のプレッシャーもありません（笑）。
でも、この動画ではどうしても賀茂川の桜をご紹介したかったんです。河川敷の桜といえば、背割堤、目黒川、淀川、あるいは京都なら哲学の道などを思い浮かべる方が多いかもしれませんね。
実は、賀茂川は京都を代表する鴨川（かもがわ）の源流部にあたります。呼び方は違いますが、日本語の発音は同じ「かもがわ」。北から流れてくる賀茂川と高野川（たかのがわ）が出町柳で合流し、それより下流が「鴨川」と呼ばれるんです。
出町柳にある有名な「鴨川デルタ」は、まさに二つの川が合わさる場所。飛び石があって、若い人たちが楽しそうに遊んでいる光景は、まさに日本の「癒し」や「日常系アニメ」に出てくるような、ほのぼのとした日和（ひより）を感じさせます。
鴨川は「京都の母なる川」とも称され、「京文化」そのものを象徴する存在と言っても過言ではありません。夏には川床（かわどこ）料理が楽しめ、三条から四条にかけての河川敷は観光客でいつも賑わっています。隣接する先斗町や木屋町通は、京都らしい風情ある街並みが魅力です。
ですが、そこから少しだけ上流（正確には北方向）へ足を延ばすと、観光客がぐっと少なくなり、まるで別世界のような静かで心地よい空間が広がっているのをご存知ですか？これが、このシリーズの主張です。
「ほんの少し場所を移すだけで、喧騒から離れて心安らぐ、もう一つの景色に出会える」
というわけで、ゆっくりと北へ歩いてみましょう。
この日（4月13日）は、もう桜シーズンの終盤の週末。天気は少し曇りでしたが、最後の桜を楽しもうと、賀茂川の河川敷では学校のグループや友人同士が集まって、お花見を楽しんでいる姿が見られました。
河川敷には桜をはじめ様々な植物が植えられているほか、サイクリングロードやバスケットコート、ピクニックにぴったりの広い芝生もあります。また、歴史的には河原（かわら）は特別な公共空間で、出雲阿国によるかぶき踊りのような露天での芸能の場、人々の集まる場として、様々な役割を果たしてきました。
葵祭（あおいまつり）の行列が近くを通ったり、夏の五山送り火（ござんのおくりび）を鴨川沿岸から眺めたりと、京都の伝統的な行事とも深い関わりがあります。
そんな鴨川沿いを、本と水筒片手にひたすら北へ散歩し、好きな場所に座って読書をし、最終的に北大路駅まで行って食事をしてから引き返す…これがだいたい2週間に一度の私の「読書の道」です。
さて、2025年の花見穴場シリーズは、これで一旦おしまいです。また来年、桜の季節にお会いしましょう。
