Located in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Kintaikyo Bridge and Iwakuni Castle are an iconic pair that perfectly represent Japan’s historical and architectural beauty.
The Kintaikyo Bridge, recognized as one of Japan’s “Three Great Bridges,” is famed for its unique five-arched wooden structure.
Built in 1673 by the third feudal lord, Kikkawa Hiroyoshi, to withstand the frequent flooding of the Nishiki River, the bridge is a masterpiece of traditional joinery, originally constructed without a single nail.
Although destroyed by a typhoon in 1950, it was meticulously rebuilt in 1953 using the original designs, a testament to the community’s dedication to preserving their cultural heritage.
Across the river, atop Mount Yokoyama, stands Iwakuni Castle. The original castle was constructed by Kikkawa Hiroie in 1608 but was tragically dismantled just seven years later due to the shogunate’s “One Castle Per Province” decree in 1615.
The current keep is a 1962 reconstruction known for its rare “Momoyama style Nanban-zukuri” architecture. From the top-floor observatory, visitors can enjoy a superb panoramic view of the arched Kintaikyo Bridge, the winding river, the surrounding Kikko Park (the former domain residence), and the distant Seto Inland Sea.
The area is also known for its local specialties, such as the multi-layered Iwakuni Sushi and the national natural monument, the Iwakuni White Snake. Accessible by bus from JR Iwakuni Station and connected to the castle via ropeway, the entire site offers a rich blend of history, unique craftsmanship, and breathtaking seasonal scenery.
山口県岩国市に位置する錦帯橋と岩国城は、日本の歴史と建築美を完璧に体現する象徴的な名所です。 錦帯橋は「日本三名橋」の一つとして知られ、その独特な五連の木造アーチ構造で有名です。
頻繁に氾濫する錦川に耐えうるよう、第 3 代藩主吉川広嘉の命により 1673年に建設されました。釘を一本も使わずに木材を組み上げた卓越した伝統工法は、橋梁技術の傑作です。1950 年の台風で流失しましたが、地域住民の熱意により 1953 年に元の設計図通りに再建されました。
川を挟んだ対岸、横山山頂には岩国城がそびえ立ちます。初代領主吉川広家によって 1608 年に築城されましたが、幕府の「一国一城令」によりわずか7年後の 1615 年に取り壊されました。現在の天守閣は 1962 年に復元されたもので、珍しい「桃山風南蛮造り」の外観が特徴です。
最上階の展望台からは、錦帯橋のアーチ、蛇行する錦川、居館跡である吉香公園、そして遠く瀬戸内海の島々まで見渡すことができます。 この地域は、地元の名物である多層の押し寿司「岩国寿司」や、国の天然記念物である「岩国のシロヘビ」でも知られています。
JR岩国駅からバスでアクセスでき、ロープウェイで城へ登れるこの地域全体が、歴史、独特の匠の技、そして息をのむような四季折々の景観を提供しています。
