Taichung Green Museumbrary

Introduction to the Taichung Green Museumbrary

History and Development Background
The Taichung Green Museumbrary (formerly known as the Taichung City Cultural Center), located in the Shuinan Economic and Trade Park in Xitun District, Taichung, is Taiwan’s first co-constructed building integrating a municipal library and a metropolitan art museum. Spearheaded by the Taichung City Government as a major public infrastructure project, it officially opened on December 13, 2025 (Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government, 2025). The initiative aims to forge a cross-disciplinary cultural hub. However, from an academic and urban sociology perspective, situating a library—which demands a high degree of quietness—within the same complex as an art museum that emphasizes dynamic exhibitions and social interaction, inevitably poses long-term structural challenges regarding operational management, crowd circulation, and acoustic control.

Architectural Style and Design
The complex was designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of the Japanese architectural firm SANAA (2010 Pritzker Architecture Prize laureates) in collaboration with the Taiwanese firm Ricky Liu & Associates (Piñeiro, 2026). The structure comprises eight intersecting white rectilinear volumes ranging from 12 to 48 meters in height, with a total floor area of 58,016 square meters. The exterior heavily utilizes glass curtain walls enveloped in a silver-white expanded aluminum mesh. This design seeks to dissolve the boundaries between the architecture and the surrounding natural environment, materializing the spatial concept of a “library in a park, art museum in a forest.”
